Day 27 · 30 Prompts in 30 Days

Get Claude outof the app, into your files.

The Claude desktop app is fine for a quick question. The moment you work across many files it slows down, and everything you did is buried in a chat thread. So I run Claude Code inside VS Code, a free editor, even though almost none of my work is coding. Your files sit down the left, Claude works beside them, and you approve every change.

Stop running your work inside a chat window.

In the desktop app, everything you do lives in one long conversation. You cannot see your files, and last week's work is somewhere up the scroll.

VS Code is a free editor. You open a folder, see every file down the left, and open any one in the middle. Claude Code sits in a panel beside them, reading and editing the files while you watch.

01You open

VS Code, the workspace

A free editor from Microsoft. Your files line up down the left, and any document opens in the middle, the way notes open in a Notion page. You never have to write code to use it.

02You add

Claude Code, the agent

The Claude panel sits beside your files. You type in one window while it reads and edits the files in the next, and it shows a before-and-after on every change before it saves. You can even run more than one at a time.

03You keep

A folder, your record

Everything stays as real files in a folder on your computer. Nothing is trapped in a chat thread. Next week you open the same folder and it is all still there, exactly as you left it.

In the app your work lives in a conversation. Here it lives in files you can see, open, and keep.

Who this is for

Anyone who runs real work across a lot of documents, in property or any business. Almost none of what I do in here is coding. If you keep deals, numbers, and reports in scattered files and chats, this pulls them into one place you control.

Step 01 · The one-time setup

Set up your workspace in a few minutes.

You do this once. After that, starting work is just opening a folder, and Claude is already sitting beside your files.

The setup
  1. Install VS Code. It is free, from code.visualstudio.com. It is built for code, but you never have to write any to use it as a workspace.
  2. Add the Claude Code extension. Open the Extensions view with Ctrl+Shift+X on Windows or Cmd+Shift+X on Mac, search Claude Code, and click Install. You need VS Code version 1.98 or later.
  3. Open Claude and sign in. Open a file, click the Claude icon at the top right of the editor, and sign in with your Claude account. Any paid plan works, from twenty dollars a month on Pro. No API key needed.
  4. Put the panel beside your files. Drag the Claude panel to the right so it sits next to the file list. Then open your working folder with File, then Open Folder.
  5. Turn on a document preview, so notes read like a page, not raw text. Open a .md file and press Ctrl+Shift+V, or Cmd+Shift+V on Mac, for a clean side-by-side preview.
Heads up

You need a paid Claude plan, from twenty dollars a month on Pro, but no API key and no coding. Claude shows a before-and-after diff and asks permission before it changes any file, so nothing is edited without your say-so. Menu names shift a little between versions, so if a label does not match exactly, look for the nearest equivalent.

Step 02 · Build your first workflow

Your monthly portfolio update, built once.

The point of a folder is that your work compounds. You set this up once, and every month after that is two prompts.

You will build three files in one folder and let Claude keep them current: a tracker of what you own, a log of what came in, and a report for your partners.

The folder · three files

portfolio.md is your holdings, one row per property. You build it with Prompt 01.

income-log.md is a month-by-month log of rent received and expenses. You build it with Prompt 02.

CLAUDE.md is a short standing note that tells Claude who you are and what to do with new figures. Claude reads it automatically every time you open the folder. It is the plain-file version of the instructions you would set on a Project in the app. One line is enough to start: "I am a property investor. This folder is my portfolio. When I paste bank figures, update income-log.md and flag any rent that did not land."

Starter files · nothing to prepare

No portfolio details ready? Download these sample files, drop them into your folder, and edit the rows. They are filled with obvious placeholder data, so you can run the whole workflow today and swap in your real numbers later. The update file shows what Prompt 03 gives you back.

1
Prompt 01 · Build the tracker

Turn your list of properties into one clean file.

Give Claude your properties in plain text and it builds the tracker for you. You watch the file appear in the folder on the left.

Fill in the brackets, then send
I am setting up a folder to track my property portfolio. Create a file called portfolio.md with a clean table, one row per property.

Columns: property name, price paid, current value, mortgage outstanding, monthly rent, lease end date.

Here are my properties, one per line:
[property name, price paid, current value, mortgage, monthly rent, lease end]
[add one line per property]

Show me the file before you save it.
2
Prompt 02 · Log the month

Drop in the numbers, get your arrears.

Paste what came in and what went out. Claude adds it to the log and checks it against your tracker, so you see who is short before you go looking.

Fill in the brackets, then send
Update my income log for [month].

Here is what came in and went out:
- rent received: [paste each property and the amount]
- expenses: [paste each item and the amount]

Add this to income-log.md as a new [month] section. Then compare the rent received against the monthly rent in portfolio.md, and tell me which properties are short or missing, and by how much.
3
Prompt 03 · Draft the report

Turn two files into a partner update.

Claude reads the tracker and the log and writes the update for you, as a new file in the same folder. You review it, edit anything, and send it.

Fill in the brackets, then send
Using portfolio.md and income-log.md, draft a one-page update for my partners for [month]. Save it as [month]-update.md.

Cover:
- rent collected versus expected, with the shortfall
- anyone in arrears
- the total cash position for the month
- one line on anything worth flagging

Keep it factual and short. Pull every number from the two files, and note anything you had to assume.
Do it again next month

Save the folder and you are done. Next month you only run Prompt 02 and Prompt 03. Because CLAUDE.md sits in the folder, Claude already knows this is your portfolio and what to do with new figures. Every edit shows as a diff you approve first, so you stay in control of every file.

Talk it through

Stuck getting the setup working?

Message me directly if you get stuck installing the extension, or you want a second pair of eyes on your first workflow. If property is part of your plan, I can also walk you through the opportunities I am tracking right now.

What this adds up to

Your portfolio, as files you can see.

One folder holds your tracker, your logs, and your reports. You open it and everything is there, current and in order, instead of scattered across chats and spreadsheets.

The whole method, in one move

Open the folder, open the panel, and ask. Claude reads every file, makes the change, and shows you a diff before it saves.

It is faster than the app, it breaks less often, and nothing you do is trapped in a conversation. Run more than one at a time, so one file updates while another is being written.

This is how I run FourthspaceOS as a proper operating system for property. The same folder, the same agent, the same files, every day.
